New year, new goals

A lot has happened since my last post. Too much, in fact, to try and explain it all in one post. Summer was great - I spent most of it working at camp and training for the DSM Marathon. Junior year began - I am learning more about everything and wishing I knew much more. The holidays and New Years came and went like every other year - My inevitable runner's rut came with a bang and I am fighting that with avengeance. I am now in the second half of my third year at Drake University and still very much unsure on what each day will bring. This is why I run. As Dean Karnazes says, "I run because it always takes me where I want to go." I can always count on my run. It is up to me to go, I am in charge and no one can take away the miles I give to the ground each day.

At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to run every day of the year. Just like I had said I would post frequently throughout my training last year, I unfortunately fell very short. My intentions were good, but the execution failed miserably. I made it a solid 18 consecutive days. Some days I only ran one or two miles, others I really got out there. Once I returned back to school, I was worn out. Physically, I'm sure I could have gone much more. Mentally, I had hit a wall. Granted we all hit our personal wall at some point, I had to refigure my goals.

My next sight is the Drake Relays Half Marathon. The past two years I ran the 8k, but am looking for a PR in my fourth half. Hopefully I can get some friends and family in on this one too. After Relays is the intimidating Pikes Peak Marathon in August (hoping Nicci and I both get in). Summer training should be interesting.

All in all, I am much more at ease and am enjoying the good weather tease Des Moines is getting this week.

A book suggestion for the season: "My Life on the Run" by Bart Yasso - great stories and inspiration for anyone looking for either.

Happy Trails.
